Have you ever played chest or any similar smart games ? I did when I was a kid but I have to admit, I have never really come to appreciate it enough to continue playing it as a hobby. It is the kind of board games where you need to have patience and to like thinking which is not something that I particularly dislike but it doesn't really relax or entertain me.
However as soon as I started playing Go, I immediately found it a lot more enjoyable so I would like to introduce this game, maybe there rare other people like me.
Go is an ancient board games for two players that originated in China around more than 2000 years ago. What the link with Japan ? Well, as a lot of other things, Japan imported this game in between the 5th and 7th centuries and lots of people are still playing it nowadays. Many Go contests are organized every year all over Japan and the number of young players is far from negligible. Actually, there are Go Club in many elementary and high schools and famous manga ( Japanese comics ) such as "Hikaru no Go" made Go the main theme of their scenario.
It is known to be a game with very simple rules but which can be played in very strategic and intelligent ways.
Basically, you have a grid of 19 X 19 lines and the 2 players alternately place black and white stones on the vacant intersections of the grid. The goal of the game is to surround a larger portion of the board than the opponent. Once placed on the board, stones can not be moved except when they are "captured". At the end of the game, the controlled intersections, called points, are counted along with captured stones to determine who has more points. It is as simple as that but it goes without saying than tons of strategies exist and you always learn something new each time you play.
The rules being very simple and everything being based on strategy, I may have found it more enjoyable than chest because of its exotic aspect but hey, I let you judge !
