My experience of the earthquake

Writer: Benji

When the earthquake occurred, I was working in a small restaurant in the suburb of Tokyo and I was doing some things on my computer on the second floor in a little room. I was the only one not only in this room but on the entire floor when it happened so it was pretty scary...Moreover it was my fist real earthquake !

At first I thought it would end quickly like the little quake that had happened some days before. But then it started to shake strongly and so I hid under my desk since this is what I learned I had to do when an earthquake happens. When it stopped I got out of the restaurant and saw all my colleagues in front of it discussing about what just happened. They were worried about me because they knew that it was the first time I had experienced a quake. Fortunately, the restaurant was not damaged except for some utensils in the kitchen that fell on the ground. It could have been dangerous but nobody was injured so we felt really lucky, but it was before we get to know the dire consequences the quake had caused all over Japan.

After the earthquake, several parts (and each day different parts) of Tokyo had to suffer planned electricity cuts for some hours for some months. In the case of the restaurant I was working in, at first it was not really a problem because it was never happening during opening hours... until a certain day... when it happened in the middle of lunch time.

So it forced us to close the restaurant. But since there was still some work to finish and that everybody was used to work until a later time, we decided to light some candles and stay in the restaurant for a while. Eventually, when everybody had finished what he had to do, we gathered in the kitchen, sat around a table and started chatting. It was really enjoyable and it made us forget the quake and its terrible consequences for some time.
