Exhibition: Monet and the artists of Giverny: the beginning of american impressionism, at Bunkamura Shibuya

Claude Monet - Nympheas
Giverny, some 80 kilometers northwest of Paris, is known as the village where the great Impressionist artist Claude Monet spent half of his life and painted many of his masterpieces. In 1883, when Monet came to live here, Giverny only had some 300 inhabitants. Afterwards, other painters were also attracted by this typical French country village situated at just the right distance from Paris. No doubt Monet's success had something to do with, but be that as it may, by the beginning of World War I, Giverny had become an artists' colony. Records show that those artists came from all over the world, including Japan, such as Torajiro Kojima, but more than 70 percent of all visiting painters were American.

The exhibition held at Bunkamura in Shibuya, the same neighborhood as our La Casa Gaienmae Shared Appartment and Borderless Harajuku-Kitasando Guesthouse, focuses on the themes that Monet pursued in Giverny, combining works produced by American artists, to present a total picture of Giverny as an artists' colony.
